Marathon Oil Thursday began evacuating non essential workers from its Ewing Bank production platform.
A low-pressure system in the northwestern Caribbean has a 50 percent chance of becoming a tropical storm in the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Marathon’s Ewing Bank facility has a production capacity of 9,700 barrels of oil per day and 8.2 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
BP was also evacuating nonessential personnel from its four Gulf of Mexico platforms — including Thunder Horse, the biggest in the world.
It said drilling activity has been stopped but platforms are still in production.
