A fire at the coking unit of Petrobras’ 232,000 bpd Duque de Caxias (Reduc) refinery in Rio de Janeiro is being investigated by the company.
The incident is reported to have started in the early evening of January 4, 2014.
The fire was restricted to unidentified equipment, and no injuries occurred to either personnel or the environment, the company said in a release.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. A commission has been appointed to investigate the cause of the incident, according to Petrobras.
Local unions have questioned the safety practices as Petrobras has pushed the limits of its crude-oil processing capacity to 98%.
Normal industry operation is around 85% capacity.
The company confirmed the coking unit is “preserved” after the incident, however details regarding impacts to the refinery’s current production capacity remained unavailable.
