An oil worker on Taqa’s Harding platform fell into the sea during maintenance work just after 2 am Wednesday morning.
The 62-year-old male was recovered from the water and airlifted to Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick, Shetland, where he was pronounced dead.
The Harding platform, located 198 miles north east of Aberdeen, was shut down after Health and Safety Executive investigation began, and 74 non-essential personnel have been evacuated.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said, “The investigation is currently being treated as a work-related death and Police Scotland are working with partners, carrying out a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive and under the direction of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service to determine the full circumstances.”
Taqa has said that all other 108 people present on the platform at the time have been accounted for and are safe.
