A Koch Industries subsidiary holds leases on at least 1.1 million acres — an area nearly the size of Delaware — in the oil sands region of Alberta, Canada, the Washington Post said Thursday.
Conoco Phillips and Shell are the next biggest lease holders.
Koch Industries is a privately-held company. Brothers Charles and David Koch own 84% of the company.
An affiliated company, Koch Pipeline Company, L.P., owns or operates more than 4,000 miles of pipelines that transport crude oil, refined petroleum products, ethanol, natural gas liquids, and chemicals.
Koch Energy Services, LLC markets and supplies natural gas. In addition, an affiliate of Koch Energy Services owns and operates a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle electric power generation facility in Odessa, Texas.
Forbes lists Koch Industries as the second biggest private company in the Unites States.
And it estimates that David and Charles Koch are each worth $40 billion, making them the 6th richest people in the world.
