Odfjell Drilling announced Friday that it has become the majority shareholder in Robotic Drilling Systems AS (RDS).

The Norwegian company believes RDS has the potential to become “the next-generation drill-floor technology”

Specifically in drilling operation safety and efficiency.

The RDS drill-floor system will be ready for a full-scale test in 2015. The system consists of five components making up one autonomous robotic drill-floor system.

Odfjell has invest an initial sum of $8.3 million into RDS, with the expectation that it will invest an additional $5.8 million in a future share issue.
