Bad weather caused a power outage on Wednesday that led to the closing a crude unit at Marathon Petroleum’s 522,000 bpd refinery in Garyville, Louisiana.

Marathon communications manager Jamal Kheiry said initial assessments indicate that the refinery has experienced damage to a cooling water tower.

The company is continue an investigation of the damage sustained during the powerful storm.

Kheiry said, “It is likely that this crude unit will remain shut down until repairs are made to the cooling tower.”

“Once we determine the timeframe for repair, we will have a better understanding of the production impact,” he said.
