Eni announced on Wednesday it had won three new exploration permits from Algeria’s state-owned Sonatrach for work in southern Algeria.
According to Eni, the three areas covered by the permits were “of great interest and potential”.
The Italian company has not disclosed if the onshore exploration was for oil or for gas.
The announcement was made the same day Italy’s Industry minister Federica Guidi was visiting Algeria to discuss energy supplies.
Eni has been present in Algeria since 1981, and is currently in the middle of a corruption case in the country involving its 43 percent owned subsidiary Saipem.
