Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said on Thursday that Petronas has invested around $8 billion in Turkmenistan to further increase oil and gas production.
Najib said with this large investment, Petronas will take a more strategic role in Turkmenistan.
“Petronas also plans to increase its gas and petrochemical flow ( in the exploration area). With this, the output in the production sharing contract area can be further enhanced,” Najib said.
According to the prime minister, Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov considers Petronas as a partner that understands the aspirations of his country.
“That is the reason why he wants Petronas to expand its investment in Turkmenistan while training the country’s citizens to gain experience in the oil and gas sector,” Berdimuhamedov said.
Petronas has been operating in the Central Asian country since 1996.
