Don Armijo was named CEO for Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) Wednesday, a consortium established after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill to prevent similar accidents.
Armijo has served as COO of MWCC since March 2013 and was previously global operations excellence manager for Shell International Exploration and Production.
His appointment will become official next week.
Armijo is replacing current CEO Marty Massey.
MWCC is composed of 10 member companies, including Texas-based Anadarko, Texas-based Apache, UK-based BHP Billiton, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Hess, Shell and Statoil.
The consortium members drill 70 percent of all deepwater Gulf of Mexico wells.
The MWCC maintains two capping stacks, devices that can be deployed to plug well spills, and can also send personnel and other equipment to control blowouts.
