An investigation is underway in Norway after a worker on the semi-submersible rig Scarabeo 8 fell overboard during development drilling Friday at Eni’s Goliat field in the Barents Sea.
The man was rescued by standby vessel Esvagt Auroroa and was airlifted to a hospital in Hammerfest for minor injuries, Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority said.
The unidentified man reportedly fell between 49 feet to 65 feet.
Operations at the Scarbero 8 were halted and the area around the Saipem-owned rig was cordoned off by safety officials.
The PSA is conducting an investigation to establish the cause of the accident.
“Among other objectives, the PSA investigation will seek to clarify the course of events and identify the direct and underlying causes of the incident,” the PSA said.
The Scarabeo 8 is currently contracted to Italy’s Eni under a five year deal reportedly worth $840 million.
Production at Goliat is expected to start sometime in mid-2015.
Goliat will be the first oilfield brought online in Norway’s Barents Sea.
