A Texas oil field worker died Monday after falling from an Xcel Energy operated oil rig in Goliad County, Texas.
Scotty O’Neal Stanley, 40, was working near the top of a 50 foot tall rig when he slipped and fell, the Victoria Advocate said.
Goliad County Sheriff’s Office said a safety harness stopped Stanley’s fall but he hit the rig’s superstructure and was knocked unconscious.
“The victim had a visible injury to his forehead; however, an autopsy revealed this was not a fatal injury,” Goliad County Sgt. John Pape said.
Officials are waiting on additional lab tests to confirm the cause of death.
Other workers at the site said they did not witness the accident but heard Stanley’s hardhat hit the ground.
The Goliad County Justice of the Peace has been asked to perform a formal inquiry into Stanley’s death.
