A blaze broke out at a Pemex offshore platform operating in the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday morning, killing at least one person and injuring 16 others.
About 300 workers were evacuated from the Abkatun Permanente platform in the Bay of Campeche after a fire started at the platform’s dehydration and pumping area, Mexico’s Pemex said.
Pemex said that a contractor working for Mexico-based services player Cotemar was killed during the accident while another worker was seriously injured.
All 16 injured workers are being treated by medical personnel at the Hospital General de Pemex in Ciudad de Carmen and at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social.
The names of the victims have not been released yet.
Mexico’s Pemex has deployed eight firefighting vessels to the platform and is applying its emergency action plan.
The cause of the accident is still unknown.
