Italy’s Eni has confirmed that 12 workers in Nigeria died on Thursday after a pipeline blast.
Eni said that an explosion occurred in the late afternoon on 9 July at a repair work site for the Tebidaba-Clough Creek line, an oil pipeline in Nigeria’s onshore Niger Delta.
The pipeline had previously damaged by acts of sabotage, Eni said.
The explosion resulted in the death of 12 members of the maintenance team who were working for a local services company.
Three other workers were injured.
The causes of the incident is being investigated by Eni and local authorities.
“The company expresses its deepest condolences to the families involved in this tragic accident,” Eni said.
The company said that further information will be released as soon as it is available.
