A blast at a giant Siberian oilfield on Thursday killed three people and severely injured three others.

According to TASS, the explosion occurred on Thursday at the Verkhnechonskoe oilfield in the Irkutsk Region that is operated by Rosneft affiliate Verkhnechonskneftegaz.

Three people died as a result of the accident while two others are in extremely critical condition and another is listed as being in grave condition.

Verkhnechonskneftegaz told TASS that the explosion was caused by backfire that occurred at a power plant fuel gas receiver when a contractor was performing a startup.

Oil production at the field was not impacted by the accident.

The company did not disclose further details about the incident.

Verkhnechonskneftegaz told TASS that it will provide “social” and “material support” to the families of the victims.

According to Rosneft, Verkhnechonskneftegaz holds a license to develop the Verkhnechonskoe oil, gas and condensate field.

Commercial reserves plus potential economic reserves at the field stand at 173 million metric tons of oil and gas condensate and 115 billion cubic meters of gas.

Current oil production at the field is 8.5 million metric tons per year.
